Have you ever thought about going back in time just to fix the wrong career choices you ever made.
Making a few wrong choices can result to a devastating career journey in your lifetime, most of us tend to overlook at our own mistakes and brush them off assuming it was just a bad day and get over it, however, at some point in life, our mistakes are our own conscious choices and these choices when never taken seriously become one hell of a nightmare you can ever overcome.
As part of my entrepreneurship journey, I have been able to meet and engage with different people from many different parts of the world and it is through them that I have been able to realise some of my mistakes (choices) that I have been making and I Am here today to share a few tips so that you may not go down the wrong career path.
1. Never Be Afraid Of Failure
If you ever get too afraid of failure, it will be harder for you to figure out the best way of doing something. What I have learnt in business is that the most successful entrepreneurs have to evaluate the most probable success and failure in every project they establish. One unique way of getting prepared of your career outcomes is to list down your possible success and what might end up wrong and create a counter plan. In this way you will be able to identify possible problems before they occur and make the necessary adjustments.
“Failure is part of life, if you don’t fail, you don’t learn. If you don’t learn, you’ll never change.” Zig Ziglar
2. Don’t Avoid Challenges.
Success has proven that taking the easy way out is a short term policy that will never stand you in a good stead. For the mind to grow it has to go throughout a series of challenges and solving problems. By classic definition, a challenge is when you face a temporary difficult that helps you realise your true strength and weaknesses. Remember, what can’t kill you can only make you stronger. So aim for challenges and see how you can grow in skills and psychologically, and utilise it in your career.
3. Never Stop Working Hard
In every endeavour hard work pays. Most successful businessmen and entrepreneurs believe that hard work is the root of their success. That said, by definition, the amount of hard work that you invest in your career will determine the peak of your success.
4. Know Your Values
Taking a look at our values is very important in determining our career choices. If you think what you are currently venturing is undermining your well-being or pushing you away from what is important to you, then you have every right to say, no. And start focusing on the essential. Who you are or what you are, you are never worth of failure, always remember that.
5. Invest In Emotional Intelligence
A lot of successful businesses these days are built on emotional intelligence. Some studies suggest that a person’s success may depend on only 25% of their qualifications and intelligence while the remainder is made up of personal skills and empathy. This means you should be able to relate to the thoughts, experience and feelings of your peers at work to be successful in your endeavour.
6. Avoid Plan B
Planning is essential in most activities, it helps draw out the map towards your ultimate goal. Planning also help us execute targets effectively. It is by nature that most of us come up with very many plans when we are about to start a new project, you can have all the letters in planning, from Plan A to Plan Z. But if you find yourself giving much focus on Plan B, it means the first plan was a failure in the beginning. This does not mean you should forget about Plan B, but Plan A is the most important in every endeavour.
“However beautiful the strategy is, you should occasionally look at the results.”
7. Consider Your Hobby
Sometimes success doesn’t come from the job you have studied for, even your hobby can bring you to the peak of a lifetime success. The best way to analyse this is by considering what your hobbies are and write them down. List some reasons as to why you like these hobbies. And also list what else can be added on to these hobbies in order to stand out as your next career choice.
8. Learn From Mistakes
Experience is the best teacher, mistakes are our greatest lessons. Success won’t teach you a lesson but failure will. Successful people look at mistakes as new portals to learn more. By nature we human beings are accustomed to errors that is why we are the most advanced species on the planet. If you are to find every opportunity in your past mistakes, it will be easier to evaluate and project your future possibilities.
“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.” Zig Ziglar
9. Take Responsibilities
Once you take responsibilities you are always responsible. Responsibilities help us realise who we are and what we are meant to be. Just like in our families, when we grow up into adulthood there are particular responsibilities that we are assigned to. If you are to start a new firm, then that means there are some responsibilities you need to take on.
“The price of greatness is responsibility.” Winston Churchill
10. Look At The Bigger Picture
Finally! What do you see yourself in the next ten or twenty years to come? Are you still that same person chasing after your dreams or sitting by the pool enjoying the fruits of your career? That’s all upon you. Set long term goals, get ready to explore into the unknown. What you sow today is what you will definitely reap tomorrow. If things didn’t workout in the first place, don’t be afraid to take another shot.
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu
Never underestimate the power of starting over. You may have gone through ups and downs trying to find the right path to no avail, that should never disappoint you, we are all going down the same road and hopefully, at the end there will always be success.
